GRIMSBY TOWN 0 MK DONS 2
Second half goals from Keith Andrews and Sean O'Hanlon saw MK Dons lift the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at Wembley Stadium.
Skipper Andrews showed nerves of steel in front of 33,000 travelling Dons fans, to dispatch a crucial penalty on 74 minutes after Nick Hegarty had bundled over Danny Swailes in the area.
And O'Hanlon secured the trophy with a thumping header on 81, converting a Colin Cameron corner to send the supporters behind the goal into delirious celebration.
Few could argue that the Dons deserved to etch their names on the trophy after a game in which they dominated for long spells.
Mariners 'keeper Phil Barnes was in outstanding form before Andrews finally overcame him - producing a string of superb saves to frustrate the Dons attack.

But they could have fallen behind before the 20-minute mark when goalkeeper Willy Gueret clumsily brought down Mariners midfielder Paul Bolland.
The French stopper redeemed himself by denying Danny Boshell from the spot and Paul Ince's men never looked back.
Not only did it ensure that Milton Keynes will welcome home a trophy for the first time, it was a win that did justice to the phenomenal number of supporters that made the journey to north-west London.
Along with the extremely vocal Grimsby supporters, they created a carnival atmosphere before kick-off and, in the early stages, the occasion got the better of many.

Keith Andrews dispatches a penalty to put the Dons in front. |
After scoring two goals against the Mariners in the opening stages of games this season, the Dons were far from quick out of the blocks and Grimsby fashioned the first decent chance on nine minutes.
Peter Till led a charge through midfield and fed striker Danny North in space down the left, but the Mariners' leading scorer produced a shot that was weak in the extreme.
The Dons replied straight away when Jude Stirling found the evasive Lloyd Dyer with a ball in behind and the speedy winger quickly cut inside before firing in a low shot Barnes did well to tip wide.
Dyer was starting to get some joy down the right, supported by Stirling at every opportunity and when the two combined again, Andrews worked Barnes with a low angled drive on the run.

Ince's men looked to have built up a head of steam, but they were nearly knocked off the rails as Grimsby won a penalty on 18 minutes.
Till's speculative shot from distance broke to the right edge of the area and as Bolland chased the lost cause, Gueret started to advance.
He knew straight away it was the wrong decision and when he stretched to push the ball away from danger, Bolland went over for a stonewall penalty.
Knowing he'd done wrong, the Dons 'keeper had a bit to make to his team-mates and boy did he produce.
The man whose penalty save against Swansea got the Dons to Wembley in the first place, came up with the good again - diving to his left to beat away Boshell's effort.

Sean O'Hanlon thumps in a header for the Dons' second. |
It was Gueret's fifth penalty save of an incredible campaign, but his team took a while to compose themselves as the game turned a little scrappy.
When they did pull themselves together, the Dons again found Barnes in top form.
Kevin Gallen, picked up front in place of Aaron Wilbraham, teed up Alan Navarro and when his shot was blocked, Andrews helped it back into the mix.
Full-back Dean Lewington of all people found himself directing a header goalwards as Grimsby appealed for offside, but Barnes denied him anyway with a flying save to his right.
The Dons were starting to apply the same pressure that preceded the penalty, constantly forcing Grimsby back before the break and Swailes had a big shout for a penalty turned down when Nick Fenton seemed to nudge the ball off the defender's head with a stray fist.

Willy Gueret saves Danny Boshell's first half penalty. |
With the occasion seemingly out of their minds now, the Dons came on strong after half-time and Grimsby were struggling to keep up.
Cameron shot wildly wide when well placed on the edge of the box before sending a gorgeous ball into the path of the breaking Andrews, who saw his volley blocked by the increasingly confident Barnes on 53 minutes.
Andrews and Barnes' battle continued five minutes later when the Dons skipper met Lewington's cross from the left and the Grimsby stopper again clung on.
Substitute Peter Bore, on for North at half-time, was doing his best to hold the ball up front on his own, but he was never a match for Swailes and O'Hanlon, who either dealt with him at source or headed his crosses away easily.
When Bore did finally make some decent space alone down the right, his fierce drive across goal was plucked out of the air almost arrogantly by Gueret.
It just seemed a matter of time before the Dons scored and quite how they didn't from the scramble that brought about the penalty, only the Gods will know.

33,000 Dons fans made their way to Wembley to see MK win the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. |
Cameron found space on the left corner of the area to curl a beautiful shot that smacked the inside of the far post and a melee ensued.
O'Hanlon thought he'd scored as he drove the rebound goalwards but Barnes produced his absolute best to deny him, miraculously clawing the ball out of the goal.
His defence still couldn't clear though, and when Swailes rose to meet the loose ball he got a fairly obvious shove from Hegarty.
Grimsby protested by Phil Joslin's mind was made up, as was Andrews' as the Dons captain confidently sent Barnes the wrong way to finally break his resistance.
After all their dominance, it was a goal that brought more relief than elation for the Dons supporters, but it was a moment to treasure for Andrews as he celebrated with his team mates behind the goal.
With the deadlock broken, a second goal typically came quickly after yet another burst from Dyer won a corner on the left.
Cameron swung it into the box, O'Hanlon fought for position in the centre and headed firmly past Barnes despite an attempted block on the line.
Grimsby were never coming back from that, and had Cameron got more on a shot after being fed by Dyer inside the box, it could have been more.
The final whistle brought great celebrations on the pitch and, after making the long trudge up to the royal box, Andrews finally got his hands on the trophy.
Quite an experience for the masses of Dons fans at Wembley and a day the players will tell their grandchildren about.
Celebrations will no doubt go on into the night for Ince's marvels, but it's business as usual at Lincoln on Friday night.
One trophy in the cabinet with promotion and the title still to fight for.
It could be some season yet.
